Hairy Maclary Design a Friend competition

Dame Lynley Dodd with winners of the contest to create new friends for Hairy Maclary (from left) Katie Lusby, Claudia Wills and Lepeka Karenga

The Hairy Maclary competition was to design a friend for Hairy Maclary and write a short description about the character’s likes, dislikes and useful traits. This was a very popular competition within our school and overall there were over eight hundred entries from the schools in the region and Becky Kavenga and Katie Lusby from room 19 were the overall winners! Runner-up was Maddie Ormsby from from Kaimai School, who invented "Long Bill Flap, who likes to clap" a pelican like bird.
On Friday 6th November Becky and Katie went to Tauranga Library for the prize giving of the Hairy Maclary Design a Friend competition with Miss Makgill.
Dame Lynley Dodd presented the girls with their personal prizes and the school prize. They received a Hairy Maclary book each which includes four of Dame Lynley Dodd’s stories and the school received nine of the Hairy Maclary books which are now in our school library for everyone to enjoy.
Well done to the Becky and Katie on their fantastic achievement and for your enjoyment here is a section of their entry. If you would like to read and learn more about this new and exciting character, please visit the children’s section at the Tauranga Library, where the winning entry is on display.

Western Bay of Plenty Speech Competition

On the 23rd of September, Anna and I competed in the WBOP (Western Bay of Plenty) speech finals. We were up against many difficult people who have had experience in the public speaking arena. We were both very nervous. As it started I was sixth on out of the Year 7's and Anna was 4th for Year 8's Everyone was very skilled and the competition was very tough. The Year 7's final results were confirmed as the following:

1. Tauranga Intermediate School
2. Bethlehem College
3. Aquinas College
4. Otumoetai College

And the Year 8 results were:
1. Omokoroa Number One School
2. John Paul College
3. Tauranga Intermediate School
4. Aquinas College

We were both very happy with the results
and feedback we received.
